Google Plus American Heart Association: Healthier Hearts

Alphabet (1)

Google Life Sciences and the American Heart Association have announced a five-year initiative to collaborate on a research to study the treatment, causes and prevention of heart disease. The partners will contribute $25 million each to support a medical, engineering and technology team, headed by one person to be named early next year.

The joint research announcement came Sunday at the Heart Association’s annual scientific meeting in Orlando, Florida. Google’s Life Sciences division is one of the units of newly formed Alphabet Inc. and is a part of an ongoing Google effort to collect data on the genetic and physical traits of a healthy human.

Life Sciences Chief executive officer and molecular biologist, Andrew Conrad, speaking about heart disease said, “This is the No. 1 killer in the world, and we should shake it up a bit.” He added that Google’s expertise in machine-based learning, data analytics and sensors are some of the strengths they bring to the task of breaking new ground in fighting cardiovascular disease. The Heart Association CEO, Nancy Brown said, “We live in an era today with resources that haven’t been available until now.” Advances in computer science coupled with lowering costs of genetic sequencing are allowing researchers to collaborate across differing scientific disciplines.

This collaborative effort will try to discover strategies to address and reverse development of coronary disease. Both groups accept that there will be big challenges, but hope a concerted effort with long-term funding will produce results that go above and beyond incremental advances.

Once more, an example of Google’s ongoing efforts to ‘help’, not only make money.
