These days, when we talk about the rise of the Chinese smartphone manufacturers, the names that come up are Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, OnePlus, Lenovo and Meizu. And they are all on the move and seem to be on the verge of making an impact on the American market. But, one company that most Americans have never heard of is ZTE. In 2014, they saw a 94 percent rise in net profits, mostly due to smartphone sales in China. While in 2013 they were at 1.36 billion in profits, the following year they accomplished 2.63 billion.
This strong growth was driven by high demand for low-cost mobile devices, just as it has pushed the other Chinese companies up the profit ladder. And, like the others, ZTE has its sights set on more global expansion, hopefully, making an incursion into the American market. To drive this plan, ZTE has increased its marketing budget by 50 percent for 2015 and is targeting the United States market. The other Chinese OEMs have not yet revealed a specific American market strategy, as far as we know.
Not many are aware that ZTE is the 4th highest mobile manufacturer in the US, behind Apple, Samsung and LG. This, despite the fact that they have not as yet had a strong marketing campaign in America. That is about to change. The current plan is for them to become the third largest smartphone maker in the US by 2017. Not an unrealistic goal, considering its American smartphone sales went up by 50 percent last year.
When looking at reviews of ZTE products, and phones in particular, over the past couple of years, the quality seems to keep getting better. The prices generally fall in the mid-rage category, while the build quality gets closer and closer to flagships of other companies. So, looking for a high quality smartphone at a good or even bargain price makes ZTE look better and better.
So, don’t be surprised if you begin to hear more about ZTE in the US. They seem to be in a good place when it comes to making inroads into the American market.
