Well, that sucks. Was hoping to see a Pixel branded smartwatch to be released next year. In the past, there were rumors of a Nexus branded smartwatch to come out and that never happened. For a while there were rumors of a Pixel smartwatch would be introduced sometime next year, 2017.
Google smartwatch info
In an interview, Jeff Chang, product manager of Android Wear at Google, said there will be two new Android Wear smartwatches released in Q1 of 2017. That’s definitely great news, as I am very interested to see what Google has in store for us. Chang also mentioned Google wants to help convince consumers of the importance of owning a smartwatch. Best of all, the new releases will have Android Wear 2.0 on them, which is an update we have hoped to have seen by now released to the public.
Android 2.0 will have a few new features including standalone apps, Android Pay support (I would love that!), and NFC to help support features like Android Pay.
Sigh…I was really hoping Google would brand an Android smartwatch as Pixel to steam line a slew of products like the new Pixel phones and tablets. If Google wants to take on Apple, they need to match their branding together and not be so scatter-brained. They’re not even going to brand the smartwatch as Google. It’s going to be branded with a partner! Sounds like a step backwards to me, in reference to how the Nexus line was treated.
Regardless, I will plan to buy whatever Google makes. Stay tuned for more news and info about the smartwatch from Google to be released sometime in the near future.
