Acer has just added another compact desktop to what seems to be a growing market. The Revo One RL85 is a versatile little beast. One the one hand, it can serve as a desktop, but it also functions quite well as a multimedia player and/or storage medium. At only 15.5 centimeters (about 6 inches to those of us who only speak American), it’s as compact and portable as one could desire.
First shown as CES, it began shipping in Europe recently and, though you can’t yet buy it in US stores, it is available at Newegg and on EBay. The starting price for the entry level offering is $249.99. That comes with Intel entry-level Celeron processors. But, $479.99 will jump you up to Intel’s Core i3 Broadwell chips.
The RL85 can reach a storage capacity of 6 terabytes using 3 slots, but the entry level model comes with only a 60GB solid-state drive. Multiple drives are supported using RAID (redundant array of independent disks) configuration. The desktop can also be controlled remotely with an app called Acer Revo Suite, available on both iOS and Android. Using the app, one may watch movies, view pictures and have access to other stored media files. When connected to a TV, it becomes quite the media center. With the Acer Smart Control app (yes, this is another app), you can stream media files to a TV through the PC. It also comes with a remote control which functions as a scrolling and mini keyboard device.
In back are two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port and two display ports. One of which is HDMI. The Revo One comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, an SD card slot on top and can support up to 8 gigabytes of DDR3 DRAM.
I have yet to see Acer’s little desktop in person, but it certainly sounds like a fascinating and powerful little machine to me. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the Revo One in stores in the not too distant future.
I LOVE technology!!
