One of the hot Kickstarter campaigns right now is BLOCKS, a modular smartwatch. it’s a seemingly simple concept. Each link of the watch is a separate module. One can add a heart rate sensor, a fingerprint scanner, GPS, extra battery, a body temperature module, kinetic charger module, camera, NFC payments, etc. The list is long with 18 modules that I can see in the video on the Kickstarter page and the backers page gives 30 modules to the top tier pledgers. The company is open source, so any developer can create a module and submit it. There is even a Developer Module block.
The Kickstarter campaign still has 35 days left, so plenty of time to check them out and get on board, if you’re so inclined. The initial goal was $250.000. Right now, they’re at $649,469, so I think things are going quite well. $5 and $25 pledges will basically get you a personal thank you. A $195 pledge gets the BLOCKS core (the basic watch itself) and $285 or more pledgers will receive the BLOCKS core and four modules of their choice. They say this is a 29% savings off retail. There is also a $445 or more pledge, a $465 or more, a $550 or more and three more levels above that, maxing at $7,800. Each higher pledge level gets more and more limited edition perks.
All in all, this seems like a pretty good idea to me, but I have not yet decided if I’m going to back it. Like most of you, I have limits on my funds and must be selective about where I spend money. At least, I have until next month to decide.
It’s a captivating idea though and the Kickstarter video gives some ideas of just how interchangeable and useful the modular watch might be. So, if it intrigues you that way that it does me, check out the website and take a look at the Kickstarter campaign.
