Apple announced their new lineups of the Apple Watch, Apple TV, and iPhones today and I wanted to share some of my initial thoughts about what’s coming. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to catch the even live (in-person or online), but was able to follow the Twitter feed and my good friend David on keeping updated on the highlights. Once I was able to get home and take a look at Apple.com and some more posts, I have a good idea of what everything is about. And let’s just say I am a little underwhelmed and somewhat excited at the same time.
Not all the products announced today were all that exciting and I am sure most people were anxious for what the iPhone X or 10 was going to be like. As usual there are so many rumors leading up to the announcement and it’s always interesting to me of what rumors end being true. For one, I was wondering if the new iPhone was actually going to cost a thousand bucks and my guess what right. My thoughts were that the iPhone 8 would not cost one grand, but the special edition would. Sure enough that’s what happened.
iPhone 8 and iPhone X
The iPhone 8, which should have just been called the 7s, is rather meh. The iPhone 8 other than the glass back looks just like the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8’s major upgrades include a better camera, processor, and wireless charging. The new glass back allows wireless charging to exist. You’ll be able to pre-order the iPhone 8 on September 15, 2017.
The iPhone X won’t be available until November and pre-orders start in October. The iPhone X takes on a new form factor with a bezelless design, ditching the fingerprint ID, and improvements with a 5.8″ display. In my opinion, Apple should have just went with the iPhone X and not worry about the iPhone 8. The iPhone 8 kinda seems pointless. It really makes me wonder how many people will go with the iPhone 8 and then later get the iPhone X or stick with just one of the new models.
Personally, I am torn with what I want to do. I’ve made plans to sign up using the Upgrade Program, because if you’re going to get a new iPhone every year it’s the cheapest way to go. I’d like to test out both iPhones, but not sure if getting the iPhone 8 is even worth the trouble. What’s your thoughts? Get both or just go for the iPhone X? Keep in mind the iPhone X starts at $999 with the 64gb model.
Apple Watch Series 3
Moving onto the new Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 3 will be something I am looking to get because it’s the only smartwatch worth using with an iPhone. There are a few models to choose from, cellular and non-cellular. Along with some expensive premium models. The cheapskate part of me says I’ll just go with the non-cellular model, but the tech lover side of me says to get the cellular one because of the phoneless benefits. If I want to go for a run or workout, I can leave the phone at home and still take advantage of the watch features.
Apple TV
I’ve never owned an Apple TV and honestly don’t plan to get one anytime soon. For the most part I am satisfied with my LG smart TV apps, Playstation 4 apps, and Google Chromecast. My family uses the LG apps the most. There’s not much of reason to get an Apple TV on my end. However, if you are tied into the Apple ecosystem I’m sure you’ll be happy to purchase one as you’ll be able to enjoy 4k content.
Verdict
Every year I get the itch to use an iPhone for a while. Android has won me over for years now and it’s not a matter what’s better, etc. Android just has worked well for me, my needs, and gets tasks done quicker in most ways. I appreciate both Apple and Android products just as much as the other. The itch to use an iPhone has come back around and I am planning to get one or both of the new iPhones. Somehow I will figure out a way to get both without breaking the bank.
As far as the Apple Watch goes, I am 50/50 between the cellular and non-cellular. Either way, I’ll have one of the watches.
As mentioned above, I am not planning to get an Apple TV.
What I would have liked to have seen with the new iPhones is USB Type-C for the data and charging port. It still makes no sense that you can’t directly connect an iPhone to the new MacBooks. Definitely would like to not have to choose between two iPhone models. Please bring back the color white. The iPhone X is overpriced.
