If anytime is the right time to get into the YouTube game, now is that time. Check out the gear listed below for the best budget vlogging gear in 2020. We still have half the year left to have more gear introduced, but for now, this is a kit to consider if you’re wanting to invest in some gear. We will go over cameras, audio, lighting, and software.
The following are all options. You don’t need everything on this list but are suggestions for a great start. If you have any questions leave a comment below.
Camera
Personally, I am a Sony fan, but in this case, I think the Canon m50 is the best option when trying to keep under a budget. If you can invest in a Sony a6600, that’s the best (not necessarily budget camera) available.
The Canon m50 comes with a stock lens, but you may want to consider upgrading to something like the Sigma 16mm lens.
For vlogging, you want a wide-angle lens if you are planning to hold the camera with a handheld tripod. The range I would look for is 10mm-24mm. Anything beyond 24mm will be too cropped into your face.
Audio
Audio is key for good video experience. Rode is a good go-to brand to try. There are many options out there, but I would get one or two of the following choices.
Rode VideoMicro – shotgun mic that has good quality and multipurpose.
Rode Wireless Go – this has been my favorite piece of gear! It’s very versatile, sounds great, and simple to use.
Saramonic – This mic does great and can be pointed in many directions. It’s also very small and travel friendly.
At least get the VideoMicro, but if you can squeeze in some more money, get the Go, you won’t regret it.
Lighting
Lightning is another important part of the video. If you can, window light with blinds or shades are goo to use during the day and doesn’t cost extra. But for controlled lighting, there are a couple of things to try.
House lights – change all your house lights to day-white bulbs.
Ring light – place the camera in the middle and the light will help your headshot framing.
Softboxes – I like to place one softbox on each side of me, with one high and the other low.
Software
Now that you’ve recorded your amazing video, you’ve got to edit it and get it ready for everyone to see. Personally I like Adobe products. I use Premiere Pro, but that is a big bite to chew right away. If you can afford it, go for it and take small steps for learning. If you get the Adobe Suite, you get all Adobe editing tools which include Premiere Pro, Premiere Rush, Photoshop, and Lightroom. If you get the Photography package, Rush comes with the bundle.
