Google I/O – Why it’s important to the everyday user

Google I/O 2017 is a developer conference. It began yesterday and continues through tomorrow in San Francisco. So, why should the everyday smartphone/tech user care? Think about where all the cool, new tech comes from. Yes, Google drives it with all the ground-breaking projects that they originate, but who brings them to us, the consuming public. Developers, of course.

When I say developers, I believe most of us think of that guy or gal that comes up with the new, cool app that everyone grabs and starts using. We often think lone wolf, when developers are mentioned, but the reality is, we should be thinking corporate first, then single developer. Many of the most successful apps that we see in Android (and iOS) are brought to us from companies with teams dedicated to developing one app (Pokemon Go from Niantic comes to mind).

And some of the best and most successful apps built into our smartphones came from Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola, etc. Let’s also not forget that many of the apps we use on a daily basis came directly from Google. Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Photos, Google Drive, Google Play Music and You Tube are just a few examples.

Yes, the lone inspired developers have also contributed great apps but, either way, without the groundwork that is laid by Google (and others), many apps loved by all of us consumers would simply not exist.

So, we everyday users should pay at least SOME attention to what comes out of Google I/O and other developer conferences. For us, it’s a small glimpse into the likely near future of what we’ll be pressing and swiping on our handsets, while being amazed that such functionality can be built into a smartphone.

Just sayin’.
