EU – keep the propaganda going – Google is the bad guy

Margrethe Vestager

The European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, in a speech delivered May 24th, continued the campaign to present Google as the poster child for corporate villainy.  Addressing the Regulation4Innovation conference in Brussels, Vestager stated, “if Google’s apps are already on our phones when we buy them, not many of us will go to the trouble of looking for alternatives. And that makes it hard for Google’s competitors to persuade us to try their apps.”

This is, of course, part of the ongoing EU propaganda campaign to justify the investigation by the European Union, accusing Google of antitrust practices. I concluded our last article on the subject with the hope that a beneficial compromise could be reached between the EU and Google.

This outcome is becoming less likely by the day.

What the Commissioner and the Competition Committee seem to be missing or ignoring is the fact that the Google Play app is pre-installed on Android phones and that app is what gives users access to many, many other alternatives to Google apps. Without the Play app, Android consumers would have no access to these apps in the first place.  Google does not “force” their apps on users any more than Apple, Microsoft or others force consumers to use their pre-installed apps.

Android manufacturers are free to include any apps that they may desire to and to modify the software to as they see fit. Amazon, Cyanogen and a number of other platforms do just that. While, Samsung, HTC and just about every other phone manufacturer load their skins on top of Android to their liking/benefit.

While the European Union has the perfect right to oversee business in their jurisdiction and to try to make a fair and even playing field for all, it seems that they are being overzealous in this ongoing pursuit/persecution of Google. There is, most likely, much more going on here than we outside observers can see with money and power being the likely driving force.

Once again, stay tuned.
