The Galaxy S7 is about to be announced and released pretty soon and there are a few reasons why I am looking forward to the Galaxy S7, seven to name a few. While some people are just ‘meh‘ about the Galaxy S7, I am actually thinking this upcoming release Samsung has planned will actually be the smartphone, next to the Note 6, to beat this year. I am more excited for the Galaxy S7 Edge than the S7 though. So for this post I am mostly referring to the S7 Edge.
1. SD Card – Samsung seemed to have listened to the consumer and is bringing back the SD card. That is a MUCH welcomed feature. Last year I had the 32GB GS6 and Note 5 and there were plenty of times I wish I had the 64GB model or an SD card. Typically I am used to having about 64GBs of capacity on my phones. With the amount of space TouchWiz takes up along with HD photos/videos and apps, space runs out rapidly.
2. Bigger Battery – Battery life was H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E. on the Galaxy S6. The Note 5 redeemed the bad battery life of the S6. I was quite nervous that the Note 5 was going to be like the GS6, but fortunately was not. The Note 5 got some good battery life with the 3,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S7 is going to have a 3,000mAh battery while the S7 Edge will have a 3,600mAh battery. That’s a hefty battery for the S7 Edge! Being that there is not going to be a removable battery, bigger the battery, the better.
3. Screen Size – Samsung is doing a smart move with this one. For those that like a smaller size screen, they can get the S7 which will be about 5.1 inches. The S7 Edge is supposed to have a 5.5 inch display, which is my happy minimum size for screens.
4. Android 6.0 Marshmallow – The one feature I am excited about from Android Marshmallow is Android Doze. Android Doze with the 3,600mAh battery should give some phenomenal battery life results.
5. Water Resistance – This is another feature that was stripped away with the Galaxy S6 compared to the Galaxy S5. Many S5 users really liked the water resistant technology. One of my co-workers who isn’t a smartphone enthusiast mentioned to me that it’s a feature she really wants with a phone. Personally, I like the extra protection knowing it can get wet without worry.

6. Better Camera? – Samsung seems to be the standard of camera quality when comparing with other phones. While LG and Apple are contenders as well, in my opinion the latest Galaxy phone tends to always have the best camera. Of course time will tell if the S7/Edge will live up to it’s reputation. This time around they are dropping the megapixels and improving low light capabilities. And I am OK with that. Samsung has done a fantastic job with low light results and if they are trying to get better, it is a welcomed adjustment. It’s the software that counts. Apple had the same megapixels in many generations of iPhones and the camera quality still got better with software tweaks. Samsung can/has done the same in the terms of software, but they improve the hardware as well.
7. Samsung Sets The Bar – What is the phone that everyone compares to (well at least on the Android side of the spectrum) each year? It’s a Samsung phone. Every phone that comes out is compared to the latest Samsung Galaxy device. The better Sammy gets, the better everyone else gets. Whether you like Samsung or not, they influence how well other company’s phones are.
Honorable Mention: Screen Quality – Till this date, I don’t think my eyes have enjoyed a better phone screen than what I experienced with the Note 5 or Galaxy S6. They just looks great. While this is a preference and other’s might think otherwise, it’s hard to deny that Samsung makes great looking screens.
While the physical build is not changing too much, it is not a big deal to me. I’ve seen and heard some griping about how the design doesn’t look much different than the GS6, but do we need an overhaul of a change every year?
